The Broken Empire Trilogy is made up of ‘Prince of Thorns’, ‘King of Thorns’ and ‘Emperor of Thorns’. If you know this before you start the first book, which I did, there’s a feeling of inevitability to the protagonist’s rise which is hard to get away from.
However, that is where the predictability somewhat ended. The writing was sharp as thorns – at times even poetic – and you don’t get much more of an antihero than the protagonist, Jorg Ancrath (though Lawrence would debate this classification of the character).
If you like your ‘Anti-Heroic’ Fantasy full of dirty fighting and bad language, and darkly beautiful as a deadly black rose, then this is a trilogy for you.
